You are a Rebel Girl!

I had the great opportunity to be part of “Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls” as an illustrator and I’m still in shock!

5th edition Rebel Girls Book 2022

This editorial is dedicated to telling stories about girls and women who made a positive impact in the world due to their abilities, skills, intelligence and desire to move forward, as well as doing activities to encourage girls and young people from all over the world to want to follow their dreams and also they sell cool merch on their website 😉.

On January 31 I got an email in my spam folder, it was the Art Director who wanted to know if I wanted to be part of the next edition of Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls, I saw this email on February 2 in the morning since it did not appear in my main folder.

It seemed a bit strange to me since I did not expect it and most of the time that I get to apply for a vacancy or a work-for-hire they do not contact me again, on another occasion I had already sent my portfolio to this publisher for the last edition of the same book they did in Rebel Girls but it didn’t fit… Anyway, let’s go back to the day when I read it in the mail (lol🤪), I jumped with emotion, cried with happiness, screamed, and obviously I answered immediately that… Yes! I didn’t know what to think, something like this had never happened to me! I sent her everything she asked me at that time and waited for her to answer me again.

3 days later she sent me the most detailed work proposal and several documents for me to sign and everything would be in order.

I had to illustrate Nalleli Cobo, a girl who, at the age of 9, along with her mother, fought to close an oil refinery that was several blocks from their community. This refinery was causing them many health problems for a year. there were many cases of people living in the same area (Los Angeles, California) with breathing problems, nose bleeds, lung problems, and headaches. They managed to file a lawsuit and shut the place down. Since then, she has been an activist who has fought for the rights of her community. I felt super lucky to be able to illustrate a girl as incredible as her, I was very moved by her story since at only 9 years old she was able to achieve something like this.

Going back to the delivery dates for Rebel Girls… ✨

There were 3 delivery dates:

Sketch: February 7, 2022

This day I sent the sketch, again I waited for them to answer me and since I am super anxious I sent several emails because the date of the second installment was approaching and I had not received a response.

Color rough: February 14, 2022

The happy second installment, the same day they sent me a response email from those I had sent previously and they told me that they were taking a long time because they had another book on the way and finally they gave me several indications to change and modify a little the sketch..

Final draft: February 21, 2022

For this last installment they asked me to modify Nalleli’s arm and put it in another position as well as add more things in the background and since I wasn’t very convinced anymore and after seeing it so much I decided to change it “a little”… and that’s how it stayed, I didn’t show them the sketch because of this change I didn’t save it just as I couldn’t just deliver a sketch because it was already the last installment.

They liked more this version of the illustration and they accepted it only I had to make more changes and the process took a bit longer, the last delivery already with the PSD format I delivered until March 15, 2022.

I understand that there are more artists and they can’t answer from one day to another because they have to see every detail of each illustration, but for me, since I’m super anxious, I couldn’t wait longer 😅 and I spent time checking my mail daily.

After all the mess that takes place every time a publishing house asks more than 50 illustrators to illustrate rebellious girls, the file is delivered in RGB colors for printing, they are sent and one has to wait several months to finally be able to spit that could be part of this editorial 😅. It’s a long process, but it was worth every second and moment of uncertainty.

If you ever have the opportunity to browse the book in a bookstore or buy it, look for my name and please send me a photo.📸🖼 It will make me very happy to know that you found me in an internationally recognized publisher!!! 😱😱.

The book is already in presale on the official page of Rebel Girls and goes on sale this October 4th.

When I get a copy of them, I’ll be sharing them on my instargam and tiktok 🤗.

Thanks for reading my story…
