How did International Women’s Day started?

The first official National Woman’s Day, held in New York City on February 28, 1909, When 15,000 women marched through New York demanding shorter working hours, better pay and the right to vote. A year later, the Socialist Party of America declared the first National Woman’s Day.

8M World Movement

International Women’s Strike (IWS), also known as the 8M Movement, was created in 2016 by more than 50 women’s organizations from around the world.

Its main purpose is to make visible the various forms and expressions of sexist violence suffered by women around the world. This international women’s strike takes place within the framework of the celebration of International Women’s Day, on March 8.

How to support the 8M March from home?

Although many people continue to send congratulations “to the most beautiful creation in the universe” on this day, the truth is that March 8 is not for congratulations. Instead, it should be dedicated to reflection and action against the salary gap, inequality of opportunities, sexual exploitation, street harassment, femicides and all manifestations of violence against women.

Here are some recommendations to contribute to the cause if you do not have the opportunity to attend the march. Check the options and put them into practice during the next Women’s Day.

1. Learn and reflect

I suggest you read specialized works, listen to podcasts and keep up to date with feminist cultural projects.

this day is ideal to meditate on our actions, attitudes and thoughts based on macho conceptions that we can modify for the benefit of the women around us.

2. Talk to the people around you about the subjec

Social networks allow us to talk to the world about violence against women; however, the dialogue in person with our environment can also make a difference. Invite your relatives, colleagues and peers to reflect on these problems and learn about their personal experiences on the subject.

3. Use social networks against disinformation

Throughout the day, social networks are flooded with messages about the feminist struggle and, especially, about the mobilizations that take place in the country. Despite being an extremely useful tool for finding out what is happening in real time, it can also become a channel for misinformation.

To prevent the spread of false news or images that do not correspond to the place and time of the march, i recommend that you check the source of the information before sharing it; In this way, we will be able to cut the publication chains that contain erroneous or outdated data.
